Giant Chess Board, New York, NY
On the corner of Third Avenue and 48th Street on
the side of a 9 story building next to 767 Third Avenue, one of the premier
high rises in New York City stands this giant Chess Board. This public game,
which has been going on since 1982, is played on a 3 story high chess board
with chess piece that are 2 ½ feet flat discs that adhere to the wall. It
features famous classic chess games made by past and present world champions.
Each Wednesday at noon, with the help of a hydraulic crane the next move is
made. The next move is designated by color by a flag next to the board.
