Birthplace of the Grain Elevator, Buffalo, NY

In 1842, Joseph Dart, a Buffalo merchant and machinist Robert Dunbar built the world's first steam-powered elevator. Oliver Evans originally designed it. Its basic principles, to transfer and store grain opened on this site and are still being used in elevators along Buffalo's waterfront.
