Birthplace of General Abner Doubleday "Father of Baseball", Ballston Spa, NY

Born on June 26, 1819, Abner Doubleday, is credited with inventing the game of baseball. A graduate of the United States Military Academy (1842), he would raise to the rank of a Union General during the Civil War. His father served in the War of 1812, and Abner would serve in the Mexican American War and the Civil War. He was second in command at Fort Sumter and it was he that gave the order to fire back at Confederate forces bombarding the Fort. Doubleday also fought in the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of South Mountain, the Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of Gettysburg. After the death of General John Reynolds, Doubleday took command of the 1st Corp. He defended Chambersburg Pike until retreating into the town of Gettysburg. Participating in Pickett's Charge he was wounded in the neck on the third day of the battle. Although many baseball fields bear his name and pay homage to him for inventing the game of baseball, it was proven that he was not the originator of the sport. Doubleday died, after a long career in the military, he died in New Jersey in 1898 at the age of 73.
