It is said that Joseph Palmer was persecuted for wearing a beard in the early days of North America, Refused communion in Fitchburg, MA in 1830 by his minister, he took communion wine on his own. Days later he was grabbed by a group of men who tried to shave off his beard. He pulled a knife and cut several of them landing him in jail. He is famous for writing the Worcester Spy Newspaper chronicaling the event and his imprisonment, He is buried here in the Evergreen Cemetary in Leominster, MA on Palmer Rd parallel to Main Street.
