Mister Ed's Elephant Museum, Orrtanna, PA
What if your daily commute included the amazing Mister ED'S ELEPHANT
MUSEUM. As you crest South Mountain on the famous Lincoln Highway Route
30 you are greeted by Mister Ed's unique tribute to candy and elephants.
Boasting the largest PEZ Collection and the best tasting fudge in
Central PA this Roadside America attraction should be a required stop on
your way from Chambersburg to Gettysburg. This site along with The
Cottage in Chambersburg are the locations of the movie Route 30 Too due
out soon. (Mister. Ed is in this movie as well as the first one, Route 30.)
While outside, facing historic Route 30 you have the life
size talking elephant Miss Ellie and Commander Robert Eli elephant guarding the
fish pond. Inside you have one of the most extensive Elephant collections in
the world. Open since 1975, Mister. Ed’s
has over 12,000 elephants in his museum.
I was saddened to see one morning upon my commute that
Mister Ed’s had suffered a fire in which he lost most of his buildings and over
2,000 elephants. Rebuilt and opened again in 2011, Mister Ed had the help from
volunteers in the community and fans from all over the world donated elephants
to replace those lost. As you walk in you will see a elephant mosaic made from the remnants
of the burned and broken elephants lost in the fire.Along with the elephants, Mister Ed’s sells candy, peanuts
and some of the most delicious fudge you will ever taste
