Giant Chair, Dillsburg, PA

Giant Adirondack Chair, Dillsburg, PA.

Right in front of a Pennsylvania wine store so I blinked twice and rubbed my eyes before turning in for pictures of this mammoth summer relaxer. Just along Route 15 near Dillsburg. I had to stop as Gettysburg College, has hundreds of these chairs throughout our campus. Any given day in the spring and fall you can see them all over campus (never in the same location as they are always being moved to accommodate so many student groups and classes as well as that secluded place to study on Stein Lake) being used by our students, faculty and staff.

On your travels up Route 15 from Gettysburg to Harrisburg, PA, there are many a strange site, the Giant Adirondack Chair and the Dillsburg Pickle Man Statue. But the waving mannequin in the historic race mobile can really catch your attention.  This is the entry way to the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing (dedicated to open wheel racing and dirt track), the museum also has an extensive collection of other forms or racing (sprint cars, midgets, stock cars, motorcycles, INDY cars, NASCAR and drag racing).

First Fire Escape Invented Here, Chambersburg, PA

Within 200 steps from each other in the center of Chambersburg, PA, you can experience John Brown's House ( Where he plotted his raid on Harper's Ferry, VA), The Old Courthouse that survived the burning of Chambersburg by confederates in 1864, and the invention of the first fire escape. Joseph Winters, a Chambersburg resident secured the patent for this life saving invention in 1878. He was also active in the Underground Railroad during the Civil War.
Winter Fire Escape was mobile, attached to a wagon (the modern precursor to the ladders that extend from our heroes fire trucks today (the hook and ladder).
